  • ┆Tony Mason is Professor Emeritus at the International Centre for Sports History and Culture at De Montfort University. His pioneering study of how football became an important part of the popular culture of the English, "Association Football and English Society 1863 - 1915" (1980) remains the classic work on the subject. His other works include "Sport in Britain: A Social History" (editor, 1989), "Only a Game?: Sport in the Modern World" (1993), "Passion of the People?: Football in South America" (1995) and "Sport and the Military: The British Armed Forces 1880-1960" (2010).
