┆This bowl was gifted to De Montfort University in 1993 by Dr. Frank May, MBE. It was to be used as the "Excellence in Performance Cup", to be awarded annually for the most outstanding piece of assessed student work undertaken in the broad field of performance studies (theatre, dance, performance or music).
Dr. Frank May was born in January 1927 in Leicester. He was educated at Gateway School before entering the Army in 1944. On his return he took over his father's electrical business as well as working for Civil Defence. He was devoted to public service, sitting on the Leicester Chamber of Commerce, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Leicestershire Crime Prevention Panel. He sat on the Council of the University of Leicester and established an annual lecture in medical research. The University awarded him an honorary degree in 1992. He was awarded the MBE in 1994 and the Freedom of the City of Leicester in 2001.
