  • ┆Fifty-seven samples of knitted fabric. Administrative history
  • ┆Gompert Stibbe first established a hosiery machine import business in Glasgow before moving to Leicester in 1888. Their factory was on Mill Lane, on the site now occupied by De Montfort University's Campus Centre. An additional warehouse was opened on Newarke Street in 1906. By the 1930s G Stibbe & Co were designing and manufacturing their own knitting machinery, exporting worldwide. However, changing fashions and industrial decline led the company to close in 1975. The fabrics in this collection were saved by Stibbe's former Technical Director Roger Duffey (1920-2010). Duffey attended the School of Textiles at Leicester College of Technology and worked for Stibbe from 1936 to 1973.
